Naidiri Marine
Biodiversity Park

We are Naidiri Village. Since 2009, we have been successfully running a Marine Protected Area, along the coral coast of Fiji, to improve ocean health.

Now, we want to show you what we have achieved by taking you on the ultimate Fiji coral reef snorkelling experience, with a complementary indigenous village tour.

We want to replenish fish stock in our qoliqoli, an important food source, as fish levels have recently depleted due to over-fishing and malpractice.

Coral reefs are the most biodiverse marine environments that are rapidly being destroyed by climate change. We hope to preserve our reefs for our future generations.

We believe in educating the children and youth of today to secure our tomorrow. Our aim is to inspire young minds to reconnect with nature.

Marine Protected Area

The Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park is an official marine protected area (MPA), locally known as tabu. When we originally launched in 2009, the area of our MPA was 1,200m². Today, in 2024, the area is 28,800m². The area spans 160m in length along the shore and 180m in width from the shore out to the ocean.

What is an MPA?

An MPA is a defined region of the ocean where human activities are restricted in order to conserve marine resources and biodiversity. In our case, this means our MPA is a no-fishing zone. We take our MPA one step further by regularly planting and managing coral nurseries.

Why are they important?

MPAs help to conserve marine wildlife and increase biodiversity by preventing over-fishing and destruction of habitats. This enables the protected waters of Naidiri to be home to an abundance of biodiversity including a vast array of colourful fish, crabs, sea snails and so much more! The lucky visitor can even find blue-spotted rays or day octopus hiding underneath coral outcrops or gracefully gliding across the sea floor.

Research

Over the years, we have had various different university groups and individual students join us here in Naidiri. From marine biology to anthropology, all disciplines are welcome. You can visit us for one day or stay with us long-term.

We have recently began our own research by monitoring our newly planted coral frames to assess their progress and hopefully provide evidence of their success.
